End of Summer 2008 - Assateague Island

It is believed that the wild ponies of Assateague arrived on Assateague Island when a Spanish galleon cargo ship (with a cargo of horses) sank off the coast and the horses swam to shore. Another theory is the wild horses arrived there via early colonial settlers. In 1997, a Spanish shipwreck was discovered off Assateague Island, which lends credit to the first theory.

We scheduled a day to take a ferry to Assateague Island in hopes of spotting the wild horses/ponies. The tour was canceled due to an incoming storm. We rescheduled for the next day, purchased our tickets, asked if we had time to grab our stroller and take it on board, only to watch the ferry float away as we watched on deck. We were really feeling at this point that even just a glimpse wouldn't happen. We rescheduled again for a later time in the day, hoping Brinn's lunch and nap schedule would cooperate. We must really want to see these ponies!

Third time is a charm! I know, they are just horses, but . . . considering the history behind them, it just felt unbelievable that we'd spot them.

Owen enjoyed using a net to catch critters on the island (see the ponies behind him!).

It was amazing and one of our favorite memories of the trip (except for the ride back, in which Brinn let everyone know she was off schedule.
